The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), formally the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR), is a United States patriotic and genealogical society whose members are male descendants of individuals who supported the American Revolution through military, patriotic or civil service. Founded on April 30, 1889, at Fraunces Tavern in New York City, the Society promotes the study of the Revolutionary era, encourages historic preservation, and advances civic education through national programs and local chapter initiatives. The SAR is a nonprofit corporation headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, and is federally chartered by the United States Congress.
